It is easy way to travel in Bangkok and just enjoy your time with the best city, where you can travel and see a lot of thing very interesting.
I think it's a very easy place to explore on your own or to meet others as you wish. There plenty of venues where you can sit, lounge and strike up conversations with other like-minded people.
I would say that while Bangkok and Thailand are, relatively speaking, easy places to do on solo basis or to meet others and go as a group-- this should not be seen as a invite to otherwise disregard basic personal safety or good common sense. Unfortunately, there is a small (emphasis on small) sub-set of the population out there might otherwise try to exploit your situation.
However, I do think that if you simply use good common sense and read up on some of the potential pitfalls here on TA, you'd be well covered and informed.

And don´t forget to go to visit The Chao Phraya is the major river in Thailand, with its low alluvial plain forming the centre of the country. I recently travelled solo to Bangkok. I made friends while I was on flight and I had no problem at all. Like others have mentioned just be on guard and have nice time.
